UC San Diego experts calculate how much information americans consumed in 2008. Americans consumed information for about 1.3 trillion hours, an average of almost 12 hours per day. Consumption totaled 3.6 zettabytes and 10,845 trillion words, corresponding to 100,500 words and 34 gigabytes for an average person on an average day. A zettabyte is 10 to the 21st power bytes, a million million gigabytes. These estimates are from an analysis of more than 20 different sources of information, from very old (newspapers and books) to very new (portable computer games, satellite radio, and Internet video). Information at work is not included.

Here is a short table on what this number is.

Counting Very Large Numbers
Byte (B) = 1 byte = 1 = One character of text
Kilobyte (KB) = 103 bytes = 1,000 = One page of text
Megabyte (MB) = 106 bytes = 1,000,000 = One small photo
Gigabyte (GB) = 109 bytes = 1,000,000,000 = One hour of High-Definition video, recorded on a digital video camera at its highest quality setting, is approximately 7 Gigabytes
Terabyte (TB) = 1012 bytes = 1,000,000,000,000 = The largest current hard drive
Petabyte (PB) = 1015 bytes = 1,000,000,000,000,000 = AT&T currently carries about 18.7 Petabytes of data traffic on an average business day
Exabyte (EB) = 1018 bytes = 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 = Approximately all of the hard drives in home computers in Minnesota, which has a population of 5.1M
Zettabyte (ZB) = 1021 bytes = 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

Do no evil was one of the axis of evil like terms coined for companies that are successful and those who crush smaller companies by copying what they were able to do successfully. I will try to do another post on how the G gods are doing that.

But, this post is about how facebook wants to show twitter some love. I have no problem with companies getting inspired but this is for those MSFT haters that picked up any every little thing that they did that appeared like APPL or Netscape was capable of doing. how does this sound .. ‘everybody is doing it .. why can’t i’ . How do big companies- yeah i am calling FB big relative to twitter – make it harder for new innovators a) make things free – using OPM (other ppls money) b) make technology closed (itunes – palm pre for example) wasnt msft abused/accused for doing this? c) copy their technology – make it your feature.

Short lived are the innovations when success finds them and threatens someone else’s turf.

here are some screen shots : Source

how about this there are already communities as per the author of the original article that has a hate group in facebook for this.

For one these short URL addon service might make more sense being core offering from twitter the mother ship. I am not sure what percentage of content does NOT have a link in them. (including this one)

Tr.im. After a number of attempts to sell the service, no companies in the Twitter space stepped forward to purchase and operate it in its existing form. Says the company, “There is no way for us to monetize URL shortening — users won’t pay for it — and we just can’t justify further development since Twitter has all but annointed bit.ly the market winner.”

In addition to a number of general URL shorteners such as bit.ly and TinyURL, Tr.im was also competing against site-specific services like StumbleUpon’s Su.pr and music URL shortener TinySong.

The company’s Twitter statistics (as with all URL shortening services) are used to determine and aggregate Twitter trends by Tweetmeme; however, as of today, according to the company these statistics “can no longer be considered reliable, or reliably available going forward.” Tr.im links will continue to redirect until at least December 31, 2009.

The topic isn’t new, there is enough said about – why failing is good to succeed — this particular article written by Peter Bregman in harvard business was very interesting. This shines some light on reasons why people fear to fair. For every hundred articles that tells you how to succeed this one told it is Ok to fail. If you want to read the whole article go to harvard business publications . Here are some that caught my eye ..

Every time I ask a room of executives to list the top five moments their career took a leap forward — not just a step, but a leap — failure is always on the list. For some it was the loss of a job. For others it was a project gone bad. And for others still it was the failure of a larger system, like an economic downturn, that required them to step up.

Yet most of us spend a tremendous effort trying to avoid even the possibility of failure.

If you believe that your talents are inborn or fixed, then you will try to avoid failure at all costs because failure is proof of your limitation. People with a fixed mindset like to solve the same problems over and over again. It reinforces their sense of competence.

Children with fixed mindsets would rather redo an easy jigsaw puzzle than try a harder one. Students with fixed mindsets would rather not learn new languages. CEOs with fixed mindsets will surround themselves with people who agree with them. They feel smart when they get it right.

But if you believe your talent grows with persistence and effort, then you seek failure as an opportunity to improve. People with a growth mindset feel smart when they’re learning, not when they’re flawless.

If you have a growth mindset, then you use your failures to improve. If you have a fixed mindset, you may never fail, but neither do you learn or grow.

A growth mindset is the secret to maximizing potential.

Want to increase your own performance? Set high goals where you have a 50-70% chance of success. According to Psychologist and Harvard researcher the late David McClelland, that’s the sweet spot for high achievers. Then, when you fail half the time, figure out what you should do differently and try again. That’s practice. And according to recent studies, 10,000 hours of that kind of practice will make you an expert in anything. No matter where you start.

“Some of our sites lend themselves to becoming hotspots more than others,” says Ciaran Morton, CEO of Cashbox. “It’s really just the start of our rollout. We will look at extending coverage over the coming months.”

BT broadband customers are given an Openzone allowance with their broadband packages, while iPhone users are given unlimited access to the hotspots. Access can also be bought for $10 for 90 minutes, or $16 for 24 hours.

“BT will give us a proportion of income based on minutes used per site,” said Morton, adding that the current contract between the companies is to last five years.
