This one is by Seth Godin talking about a familiar subject – be it business or cause – organize people who are passionate about the ‘thing’ you are Leading – hence the tribe reference.

It is funny and informative 17 mins. The speech talks about roots of SPCA which was first started to kill stray pets and then how it transformed into a organization to adopt these pets and not kills based on one persons initiative. There are atleast half a dozen other such examples of how ‘tribes’ are formed.

The key take away was – he asks three questions

who are you upsetting – Challenging status quo means you are upsetting some one …

who are you connecting – organize

who are you leading – focusing on that part of it but the mechanics

Quality of a leader – One who challenges status quo, ability build a culture , have curiosity , commitment to the tribe and cause

Nielsen report on ad spending in asia for the year 2008. Summary of the report.

Source: nielsen.com

Main media, defined by Nielsen as free to air TV, newspapers and magazines, increased 13 percent in 2008, while all other media (radio, outdoor, pay TV, cinema and other) posted an 8 percent increase for the year.

In 2008, three markets recorded declines in ad spend versus 2007, while another posted no growth:

Taiwan (-11%)

South Korea (-8%)

Thailand (-4%)

New Zealand (0%)

Meanwhile, five countries showed solid double-digit growth:

India (29%)

Indonesia (19%)

China (17%)

Malaysia (12%)

Philippines (11%)

Other key findings from Nielsen’s research:

A total of US$115.2 billion was spent on advertising in the twelve markets monitored.

A total of US$108.4 billion was spent on “Main Media” advertising, with television comprising 70 percent of expenditures.

Television ad spend grew 15 percent. Only three countries recorded declines in TV ad spend, while five countries posted solid double-digit growth in this category.

Although Americans are being deluged with stories of newspapers closing, cutting back and filing for bankruptcy, the medium recorded 9 percent growth, with declines in four countries.

Magazine ad spends, while still comparatively small, increased 10 percent, with India leading the way.

Radio dominated “all other media” with a 47 percent share of spend and a 12 percent increase for the year.

Is everyone being over prepared for this swine flu (epi/pan)demic .. there has been all of 40 cases reported in the US as of today. I have seen half a dozen presidential and cabinet level press briefings and non-stop ‘wash your hands’ instructions on major networks. This afternoon i hear a reporter asking if they should shut down borders and ground air traffic to south america.

This morning the bright folks over at military had a low flying ‘airforce one’ mock plan fly over hudson as a training exercise with a military jet trailing it sending panic in NY. Only to come to know that it was a training exercise and there was no warning. (article )

How about some outburst of calm! Yeah we get it this is good opportunity to show the level of preparedness. But, should we create a problem to show that you are prepared. Am i missing something?

Delving into the digital behavior of Moms (Exhibit 18) tells us more about the transformational role of social networking. Social networking plays a prominent role with Mothers aged 25-35 with at least one child at home. In addition to e-mail, they are 85% more likely to spend time with Facebook compared to the average online consumer.

“Power” Moms aged 39-54 are only 23% more likely to post comments on a social network. While “Established” Moms (aged 40-50 with 3+ children) are heavy online shoppers who stay connected via e-mail and dabble in social networking. Moreover, according to Facebook, women aged 40-50 in the home are the fastest growing demographic group on the site.
