Do no evil was one of the axis of evil like terms coined for companies that are successful and those who crush smaller companies by copying what they were able to do successfully. I will try to do another post on how the G gods are doing that.

But, this post is about how facebook wants to show twitter some love. I have no problem with companies getting inspired but this is for those MSFT haters that picked up any every little thing that they did that appeared like APPL or Netscape was capable of doing. how does this sound .. ‘everybody is doing it .. why can’t i’ . How do big companies- yeah i am calling FB big relative to twitter – make it harder for new innovators a) make things free – using OPM (other ppls money) b) make technology closed (itunes – palm pre for example) wasnt msft abused/accused for doing this? c) copy their technology – make it your feature.

Short lived are the innovations when success finds them and threatens someone else’s turf.

here are some screen shots : Source

how about this there are already communities as per the author of the original article that has a hate group in facebook for this.

Services that are in the business of providing short URLs is getting shorter .. thanks to lack of viable business model. For one these short URL addon service might make more sense being core offering from twitter the mother ship. I am not sure what percentage of content does NOT have a link in them. (including this one)

Tr.im. After a number of attempts to sell the service, no companies in the Twitter space stepped forward to purchase and operate it in its existing form. Says the company, “There is no way for us to monetize URL shortening — users won’t pay for it — and we just can’t justify further development since Twitter has all but annointed bit.ly the market winner.”

In addition to a number of general URL shorteners such as bit.ly and TinyURL, Tr.im was also competing against site-specific services like StumbleUpon’s Su.pr and music URL shortener TinySong.

The company’s Twitter statistics (as with all URL shortening services) are used to determine and aggregate Twitter trends by Tweetmeme; however, as of today, according to the company these statistics “can no longer be considered reliable, or reliably available going forward.” Tr.im links will continue to redirect until at least December 31, 2009.

Bharti Airtel has now launched a low cost net PC. The Airtel Net PC is being marketed in Airtel and Next stores in india for a cost of Rs7,999. Airtel is not the first entrant in this space. Novatium released a similar service last year making it affordable.

The device bundle is a 15-inch LCD monitor, keyboard and mouse. Storage is based on Cloud servers. The device does not have any optical media and uses Airtel broadband to connect to the Internet.

The device is powered by Microsoft and Nivio Companion. Windows XP has been customized by Nivio and connected to a backend Linux server. The Airtel Net PC comes with an online storage of 10GB. One hundred percent of security of data has been assured. The packages being offered are Home at Rs. 699 per month, Professional at Rs. 899 per month and Business at Rs. 1,199 per month.

Airtel plans to attract One million customers. Another advantage of the device is its low power consumption. Yet the moot point remains if users are willing to accept this kind of a device as a regular PC for their daily tasks. The major disadvantage is the lack of optical media that makes playing of games difficult. Hardware upgrades may not be available and the PC may become outdated very soon.

Once again a very interesting TED talk. This one is by Seth Godin talking about a familiar subject – be it business or cause – organize people who are passionate about the ‘thing’ you are Leading – hence the tribe reference.

It is funny and informative 17 mins. The speech talks about roots of SPCA which was first started to kill stray pets and then how it transformed into a organization to adopt these pets and not kills based on one persons initiative. There are atleast half a dozen other such examples of how ‘tribes’ are formed.

The key take away was – he asks three questions

who are you upsetting – Challenging status quo means you are upsetting some one …

who are you connecting – organize

who are you leading – focusing on that part of it but the mechanics

Quality of a leader – One who challenges status quo, ability build a culture , have curiosity , commitment to the tribe and cause

Group to focus on standards for cloud management, interoperability between private and public clouds

As virtualization technology continues to be more rapidly adopted, it is emerging as a common enabling foundation for delivering software solutions into IT environments along with the potential to lower IT costs and improve operational efficiencies. While deploying virtualization technologies it is also critical to have comprehensive management capabilities associated with the implementation. Along with the adoption of virtualization, more and more enterprise IT customers are looking at the cloud computing paradigm to better deliver services to their customers.

No specific standards currently exist for enabling interoperability between private clouds within enterprises and hosted or public cloud providers. DMTF’s Open Cloud Standards Incubator will focus on addressing these issues by developing cloud resource management protocols, packaging formats and security mechanisms to facilitate interoperability.

The work of the Open Cloud Standards Incubator will focus on ways to facilitate operations between private clouds within enterprises and other private, public, or hybrid clouds by improving the interoperability between platforms through open cloud resource management standards. The group also aims to develop specifications to enable cloud service portability and provide management consistency across cloud and enterprise platforms.

The current incubator leadership board consists of AMD, Cisco, Citrix, EMC, HP, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Novell, Red Hat, Savvis, Sun Microsystems, and VMware.

Found this interesting article written by Michele Goetz. Good read to formulate what questions to ask that is focused on effectiveness and efficiency.

Quick Read:

How much effort do you need to put into social media before it pays off in B2B? The answer probably has to do with what you expect from social media in the first place. The problem with B2B social media marketing is that instead of 1) increasing marketing effectiveness by facilitating sales and deepening customer relationships 2) making marketing more efficient by streamlining process and resources, it may be doing just the opposite.

There is a real hidden cost to utilizing social media for B2B marketing. It is the cost to do business. Due to the number of ways you can connect to customers, it requires a significant amount of effort to cover and manage all the properties. While you can write a single blog and push it out across multiple communities, the lack of diversity in conversations may hurt more than help. Each community probably has a different DNA. One message is not going to be relevant for all. Thus, you have to produce more content across more topics to be effective.

Another aspect of inefficiency is the art of the conversation. For social media to work, it requires a de-centralized communication web to interact with customers. Sales already has this in place as it is what they do every day. Marketing is smaller and has less resources. This puts pressure on the organization to have personalized attention to carry on a conversation. Marketing needs the ability to respond to comments, participate in groups in a conversational manner, and organize discussions and groups around a multitude of topics that customers are interested in. If you go to forums today, there are few that have real conversations happening. Mostly you see blogging and promotional content being posted. This is because it takes a huge amount of bandwidth to truly be interactive with your customers.

Harris Interactive conducts a poll of 2,220 adults was conducted online within the U.S. between March 31 and April 1, 2009. A little less than half of all Americans have a Facebook or MySpace account according to a recent The Harris Poll.

The poll clarifies “substantial differences” between who is and isn’t using social networking sites and networking software, with 51% of all Americans not using Twitter or a social networking site like Facebook or MySpace. Of those who do use the sites, only 16% update their page at least once a day. Also, and despite the hype, only 5% of Americans are using Twitter, according to The Harris Poll.

Other poll results include:

Three-quarters of those aged 18-34 years old (74%) have a Facebook or MySpace account but this quickly drops off the older one gets. Just one-quarter (24%) of those 55 and older have an account;

Tweeting is also slightly more prevalent among the young, but not by much; 8% of 18-34 year olds use Twitter, 7% of those 35-44 use it, 4% of those aged 45-54 and just 1% of those 55 and older;

While men and women use Twitter at the same levels (5% each), women are more likely to have a Facebook or MySpace account (52% versus 45%); and,

There is also an educational difference in usage of social networking sites. Two in five people with a high school degree or less (40%) have a Facebook or MySpace account compared to 55% of those with some college and 52% of those with at least a college degree.

45% of adults believe social networking sites are popular, but they won’t pose a real threat to the domination of search sites (Google, Yahoo!, etc.) while just one in ten (9%) say they may become a threat. Fully 46% of Americans are not at all sure. Even among the largest users of the social networking sites, 18-34 year olds, three in five (62%) say they will not become a real threat to the search engines.

“The media may be all abuzz about Twittering, but mainstream America is not hopping on the same bandwagon. While the younger age groups are all about the social network sites, they haven’t yet migrated to Twitter. The question is will they or won’t they? If they had found it before the media had, there is a stronger possibility they would be increasing their usage, but they may already be looking for the next big thing – before it becomes a media darling,” according to The Harris Poll statement.

SOA expert and blogger David Linthicum and Dan Foody of Progress’s SOA Infrastructure blog have excellent caveats about calculating SOA’s ROI and what will and won’t impress the business when it comes to SOA metrics.

Here goes:

Return on investment (ROI) per service (Mark Little, CTO of Red Hat). ROI per service can serve as an early indicator of your overall ROI. Little warns that all services won’t generate a positive ROI, and some services may only perform a business task in conjunction with others, which means you’d have to look at the ROI across several services.

Revenue per service (Little). Not all services will generate revenue, of course.

Service growth rate/reuse (Little), or Number of New Services Generated and Used as a Percentage of Total Services (Dr. Jerry Smith, CTO of Symphony Services). This metric can help you ensure you’re reusing services when possible and not developing redundant services. It’s also useful in calculating ROI for a service.

Business agility (Little and Linthicum) or Mean Time to Service Development (Smith), measured in how long it takes for a service to go from the design stage to the deployment stage.

Mean Time to Service Change (Smith). The time it takes to change a service is another option for measuring agility.

Reliability (Little), measured in mean time to failure (MTTF) and mean time to recovery (MTTR). Smith calls this “Service availability,” but he adds another factor to measure as part of it: “Cost of Not Using or Stopping a Service.” Smith notes that a well-designed SOA will have “low shutdown or switching costs.”

Service Vitality Index, (Smith) which “tracks the amount of revenue from new services over the last 12 months as a proportion of total service revenue.”

Leo Shuster, who is responsible for National City Bank’s SOA, wrote an excellent piece on SOA ROI in February and, in addition to many of the above IT metrics, he suggested you also look at the following business and financial metrics:

Business and financial Metrics

Efficiencies associated with service reuse

Integration time savings

Related opportunity costs

Cost savings/avoidance

Reduction in project and maintenance costs

He also offered this formula for calculating SOA’s ROI:

SOA ROI ($) = Cost Savings/Efficiencies Achieved – All SOA-Related Investments

or

SOA ROI (%) = SOA ROI ($) All SOA-Related Investments
